Do you want to obtain your Captain’s License but are unsure of the best course to take? Are you looking for more than just online or classroom instruction, but also hands-on, practical coursework? Do you want to come spend a couple of weeks in the Keys while earning your Captain’s License? Look no further. The Sea Base Captain Course is for you. This program is a product of the United States Coast Guard (USCG)-approved Sea School, and they are dedicated to helping you receive your Captain’s License.
Sea School offers U.S. Coast guard approved maritime training and is considered to be the premier maritime training school in the country.
This course is offered for the OUPV (6-pack), Master Upgrade, and Sail Endorsement. Successful completion of this course and a passing score on the subsequent proctored exam will enable you to apply for a license without having to take the official USCG exam. After the course concludes, students take Sea School’s exam which is based on the course material. This proctored exam must be passed within one year of the start date of the course. Testing is conducted either online or at the Sea School office. Test fees are not included in the course tuition and will be paid at the test.
There are no prerequisite requirements to register for this course. However, in order to apply for your Captain’s License, you must have at least 360 days of Small Vessel Sea Service, attested to by the owner or master of the vessel. Sea School will provide you with mentorship until you obtain your license.
This course will involve a lot of classroom work. We have incorporated hands-on portions that will get you on the water; practicing handling vessels under both power and sail. You will also gain practical dockside knowledge that comes with being in a marina such as fuel, charter provisions, and everyone’s favorite: pump out.
Captain Jack at Captain Jack Sailing will be the main instructor for the course. He will also be leading sessions that are not necessarily encompassed in the Sea School course but are beneficial to your growth and development as a captain. He has put together blocks on Teaching Sailing, Introduction to Celestial Navigation, and more! Check him out at CaptJackSailing!
Sea Base covers the accommodation costs. The student, once a captain license is obtained, agrees to work at Sea Base for a season. Seasons at Sea Base eligible for this commitment are spring (Mid February-April) and summer (Late May-August End). If the captain cannot fulfill this requirement, they will be responsible for reimbursing Sea Base $750 for those accommodations.
The price of all materials is included in the course fees which are as follows:
A La Carte Options are available for an additional fee:
